Hurlbut, Hinman B. (American railroad magnate and collector, 1815-1889)

Note: Art collector, horticulturalist, capitalist, railroad man, financier, and lawyer. Hinman's collection included paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sculptures. Hurlbut married Jane Elisabeth Johnson in 1840. Hurlbut left his art collection and an endowment to the city of Cleveland for the formation of an art museum, The Cleveland Art Museum, which opened in 1916. The Cleveland Art Museum held exhibitions featuring Hurlbut's collection in 1917, 1921, and 1922.
