Honorius I, Pope (Italian pope, died 638)
|
Note: According to the Liber Pontificalis, came from Campania and was the son of the consul Petronius. Patron of the arts, he helped rescue Roman structures from ruin and sponsored a restoration program of important Christian edifices. His papacy is remembered for the Christianization of the Anglo-Saxons for having ended the schism of the patriarchs of Aquileia-Grado. He supported Monothelitism, which has to do with how the divine and human relate in the person of Jesus; his posthumous condemnation as a heretic subsequently caused extensive controversy on the question of papal infallibility. |
