Beauvais Tapestry Manufactory (French tapestry factory, active 1664, combined with Gobelins 1940)

Note: Beauvais was founded by Louis XIV's minister of finance, Jean-Baptiste Colbert in 1664. Although subsidized by the state, it was a private enterprise run by a succession of entrepreneurs. One of the most popular early series of tapestries was "Les Grotesques." In 1734, Jean-Baptiste Oudry was made director and the factory flourished. Oudry stressed a higher technical standards and designed tapestries showing a variety of natural scenes. When Oudry was appointed director for Gobelins, he selected the young painter Francois Boucher as his successor. Boucher designed forty-five tapestries including "The Story of Psyshe" and "Love of the Gods." Throughout the 1700s, Beauvais also produced upholstery and wall hangings.
