Hadfield, George (American architect, ca. 1763-1826)

Note: Hadfield was the recipient of the first travelling scholarship in architecture from the Royal Academy in London in 1790. On the recommendation of the painter John Trumbull, then serving as Secretary to the American Minister to Great Britain, Hadfield was appointed superintendent of construction of William Thornton's U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. With his later projects he was one of the architects most responsible for bringing a true Greek Revival to the United States. His Greek Revivial projects include the first U.S. Treasury building in 1796 (now destroyed); the portico of the Custis-Lee Mansion (1817-1820) in Arlington, Virginia; Washington City Hall, (1820-1826, now the District of Columbia Court House); and his round peripteral mausoleum for John Peter Van Ness (1826) in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown.
