Yi Bangun (Korean painter, 1761-before 1815)
|
Note: Yi Bangun was a painter of the late Joseon period. He was a relative of the scholar-official painters Sim Sajeong (1707-1769) and Kim Giseo (active 18th century). He built friendships through poetry, calligraphy, painting, and music played on a six-stringed ziter (geomungo) with Nam Gongcheol (1760-1840), who was a civil official and well versed in calligraphy and painting, Seong Daejung (1732-1812), who was a civil official, and Kim Giseo, a scholar-painter. Yi produced a wide range of works, including landscape paintings, paintings based on poems, figure paintings, and bird-and-flower paintings. While following the Southern School of Painting style pursued by literati painters of the late Joseon period, he developed his distinctive style by simplifying forms, applying swift brushwork, and using transparent colors in blue, green, and yellow. His painting style foreshadowed the emergence of painters with unique styles, including Kim Sucheol (?-1862), at the end of the Joseon period. |
