Note: Born poor in Pennsylvania he was brought up with little education but moved to Baltimore at the age of 21 where he entered the wholesale liquor trade. He grew wealthy through investments in East Coast railroads. He moved his family to Paris in 1861 and began building an art collection. His son Henry continued his work. |
