Record Type: Person
Yi Sangjwa (Korean painter and court artist, born 1465)

Note: Yi Sangjwa was a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) active in the early Joseon Dynasty. Historical records indicate that he had originally been a private slave, but he became a court painter under a special order from King Jungjong (r. 1506-1544) for his talent at painting. His son Yi Heunghyo was also a court painter. There are two different theories regarding Yi Sangjwa: one is that he is the same person as Yi Baeryeon and the other is that they were two different figures. In 1545, he painted a portrait of King Jungjong together with Yi Am and Seok Gyeong. In 1546, he produced portraits of meritorious subjects. Moreover, in 1549 he and Seok Gyeong produced a posthumous portrait of King Jungjong from memory. The surviving works by Yi are all attributions, mostly figure-oriented landscapes and paintings of Buddhist and Daoist figures in the style of the Ma-Xia School of Southern Song and the Zhe School of the Ming Dynasty.
