Note: Of the House of Wittelsbach, son of Maximilian II of Bavaria and Marie of Prussia. Noted for having brought his territories into the newly founded German Empire (1871), for extravagant building projects, and his mysterious death in Lake Starnberg. King of Bavaria from 1864 until his death in 1886. He was an admirer and patron of the composer Richard Wagner. |
