Varma, Ravi (Indian painter, 1848-1906)
|
Note: Varma is considered one of the most significant and earliest Indian artists of the 19th century to work in oil paints. Influenced by 19th-century French academic painters, Varma produced paintings in a European historicist style often depicting mythological subjects. From 1894, his paintings were reproduced as lithographs and circulated throughout India, marking the first time in the country that an artist's ouevre could reach a mass market. |
