Saint-Cloud Porcelain Manufactory (French porcelain factory, active by 1693 to 1766)
|
Note: The first major porcelain factory in France, Saint-Cloud began production of soft-paste porcelain from the mid-1600s. The material itself was a result of the search to find the exact recipe for Far East porcelain. Some theorized this recipe was from lobster shells and plaster buried in the ground. Under Philippe, duc d'Orléans, the factory obtained an official patent to manufacture porcelain in 1702 and it claimed it's pieces were almost as fine as those from China and Japan. Early pieces consisted of imitations of contemporary metalwork with a white background and blue lambrequin motifs. Later work saw an increase of polychrome chinoiserie, gilding, and relief decorations. Saint-Cloud closed in 1766, unable to compete with more advanced work from Chantilly and Vincennes. |
