Barcellos, Vera Chaves (Brazilian mixed-media artist, born 1938)
|
Note: Vera Guerra Chaves Barcellos graduated in music from the Institute of Fine Arts of Porto Alegre in 1957, and subsequently studied fine arts for two years. On her first trip to Europe, between 1961 and 1962, she attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts and the St. Martin's School, both in London, the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten, in Rotterdam, Holand, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, where she studied drawing, engraving and painting. Upon returning to Brazil in 1965, she dedicated herself exclusively to engraving. In the 1970s, she began using photography in combination with serigraphy, and taught engraving and modeling at the Higher Education Federation of Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, between 1970 and 1977.
In 1975, she was granted a scholarship from the British Council and made a six month-apprenticeship at the Croydon College of Art and Technology, where she studied the relation between photography and the graphic arts. She took part in the Optical Nerve group, active in Porto Alegre in 1977 and 1978, and participated in the creation of the Espaço N.O. [N. O. Space], active from 1979 to 1982. She moved to Barcelona in 1986, and from then on remained active both in Brazil and Spain. Together with the artists Carlos Pasquetti (1948-) and Patricio Farias (1940-), she set up the Open Work Gallery, dedicated to contemporary art and active from 1999 to 2002. In 2003, through the donation of her private collection, she set up the Vera Chaves Barcellos Foundation, in Porto Alegre, intended to promote, preserve and divulge contemporary art. |
