John XV, Pope (Roman pope, died 996)
|
Note: Son of Leo, a Roman presbyter. At the time John XV was elected, Crescentius II was Patrician of Rome. His election followed the murders of popes Benedict VI and John XIV by the antipope Boniface VII. His papacy is noted for having carried out the first solemn canonization in history by papal decree. His name is John XV or XVI, depending upon the numbering sysem. Also, due to confusion regarding succession in the historical record, he has been called "John XIVb." |
