Note: Military leader who set himself as tyrant of Syracuse, Sicily; later declared himself king of Sicily. A champion of Hellenism, he waged war unsuccessfully against Carthage. Noted in in Chapter VIII of Niccolò Machiavelli’s treatise on politics as one of those who by their crimes come to be princes. |
