Lucretia (Ancient Roman matron, 6th century BCE)
|
Note: Roman matron whose story is laced with legend, but generally considered based in fact. She was the wife of one of the first two consuls of the Roman Republic, Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus. All the numerous sources on the establishment of the republic reiterate the basic events of Lucretia's story, though accounts vary slightly. Her rape and suicide played a vital role in the transition from a Roman Kingdom into a Roman Republic. For the character in the legendary story of Lucretia, use the Iconography Authority "Lucretia (Roman character)." |
