Pelliot, Paul (French scholar and explorer, 1878-1945)
|
Note: French explorer and sinologist who is best known for his February 1908 scientific expedition to Dunhuang in Gansu Province, China, to the site known as the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas. Pelliot gained access to the cave housing manuscripts walled up since the 11th century, and although it had already been found during foreign expeditions led by Aurel Stein and Count Kozui Ōtani, the cave still contained almost 20,000 scrolls. Pelliot compiled an inventory of several thousand documents, including manuscripts, illustrated books, and painted banners, and later deposited them into the Bibliothèque Nationale and the Musée Guimet in Paris. |
