Angiviller, Comte d' (French administrator, 1730-1809)
|
Note: D’Angiviller is best known for his attempts to revitalize history painting and sculpture, largely dormant since Louis XIV’s death in 1715. His sustained programme of state patronage produced eight history paintings and four life-size statues of illustrious Frenchmen, commissioned every two years from artists of the Académie Royale beginning in 1777 and continuing through the Revolution. These works include Jacques-Louis David’s Oath of the Horatii (1784) and The Lictors Bringing Brutus the Bodies of his Sons (1789; both Paris, Louvre) and Clodion’s statue of Montesquieu (1783; Versailles, Château). |
