Note: Based in Memphis, Tennessee, Withers chronicled the American civil rights movement of the 1960s as a photojournalist, as well as African-American musicians of the time. He maintained a freelance photography business documenting social and religious events such as debutante balls and funerals beginning in the 1950s. |
