Buchanan, James (American president, 1791-1868)
|
Note: Born into a well-to-do Pennsylvania family in 1791, Buchanan, a graduate of Dickinson College, was gifted as a debater and learned in the law. As president, he presided over a rapidly dividing nation. He was the 15th president of the United States (1857-1861), a moderate Democrat whose efforts to find a compromise in the conflict between the North and the South failed to avert the Civil War. |
