Chŏng Yag-yong (Korean scholar, painter, and calligrapher, 1762-1836)
|
Note: Considered the most important practical learning scholar of 19th century Korea. He was influenced by western learning including science, technology, and Catholicism. He was accused of being a Catholic convert and banished to Kanjin for 18 years after King Chongjo's death. He wrote many critical texts on the Chosŏn dynasty and was devoted to social reform. He painted landscapes, plum, and bird paintings accompanied by poetic inscriptions. |
