Napolean I, Emperor of the French (French ruler, patron, and collector, 1769-1821)

Note: Napoleaon Bonaparte's patronage of the arts was most often politically motivated. He viewed the arts as a vehicle to restore France as an artistic center, as well as to serve as propaganda for his military pursuits and public favor. The First Consul, and then Emperor, of France ruled during the emergence of the Neo-classical movement in the arts of Europe. Works created during his reign are often referred to as fashioned in the 'Empire style.' Although his artistic tastes were not refined, he commissioned many works (by artists such as Canova and David) and re-instituted vehicles for state patronage.
