Louis XIV, King of France (French monarch, collector, and patron, 1638-1715)

Note: King of France from 1643-1715, Louis XIV ruled primarily from Versailles. He was a patron and collector who sought splendor and his own prestige through artistic commissions. He established a system to administer the arts through his court and controlled the teaching of artists through the academies: the 'Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture' (reformed 1664) and the 'Académie Royale d'Architecture' (founded in 1671). Through this program, talented young artists were sent to be trained at the 'Académie de France' in Rome (founded in 1666). Charles LeBrun, the 'Premier Peinture,' also oversaw the decorative arts through the three factories controlled by Louis XIV: Gobelins, Beauvais, and Savonnerie. In 1669 Louis decided to transform Versailles into his official (and most spectacular residence); a project which Charles LeBrun managed for him. Although not a true connoisseur, Louis XIV virtually governed over the arts.
