Bowes, John (English industrialist and collector, 1811-1885)
|
Note: The illegitimate son of John Bowes, 10th Earl of Strathmore; he inherited the family estates but not the earldom. He increased the family's wealth by developing the family's coal mines and venturing into shipping. His public service as an MP and as fortune did not make him completely accepted in English society and he therefore made Paris his primary home from 1847. He bought the Théâtre des Variétés and the Château du Barry, Louveciennes. He and his wife, the actress and painter Josephine Coffin-Chevallier, founded a museum in Barnard Castle in Durham, ca. 1860; they commissioned Jules Pellechet to design a French Renaissance-style building to house their Second Empire furniture and paintings and their large collections of porcelain, faience, embroideries, tapestries, clocks, and objects d'art. Their collection included El Greco's "Tears of St. Peter" which Bowes bought in 1869 for eight pounds. The couple also collected paintings from contemporary French artists (e.g. Courbet), with whom Josephine had exhibited in the salons of 1867 to 1870. |
