Record Type: Corporate Body
New English Art Club (English artist's society, founded 1886)

Note: English exhibiting society established by a generation of British artists who looked to France for inspiration for their work and who felt that their work was neglected by the Royal Academy. In 1888 there was division in the club between proponents of Impressionism, the so-called 'London Impressionists,' and more conservative artists. The most radical English painting was exhibited at the club until the mid-1890s. After 1900 the New English Art Club served as a starting point for a number of secessionist groups, including the Fitzroy Street Group, the Bloomsbury painters, the Vorticists, and the English Surrealists. However, the society slowly lost its position as a forum for advanced art and instead, like the Royal Academy, became a venue for the more conservative traditions of British figurative painting.
