Gombrich, Ernst (Austrian-born British art historian, 1909-2001)
|
Note: Eminent art historian who was widely influential on both specialist scholars and the wider public. He is the author of the important books, 'The Story of Art,' 'Art and Illusion,' and 'Meditations on a Hobby Horse.' His work focused on the theory of art, Renaissance symbolism, and the psychology and optics of pictorial representation. His witty and lucid writing reveals his interest in scientific method and psychology and his scholarship is noted for having helped to break down barriers between art history and other disciplines. He was Director of the Warburg Insitute in London from 1959 to 1976 and he was also Slade Professor at Oxford and Cambridge. He also held prestigious chairs at Harvard University, Cornell University, and the Royal College of Art and he was awarded many international awards including the Goethe, Hegel, and Erasmus prizes.
