Ely, Reginald (English architect, died 1471)
|
Note: Reginald is first documented in Cambridge in 1438. He was active there doing minor projects and repairs until his work for Kings College Chapel began sometime by the 1450s. Reginald's work at the Chapel included its plan and general outline, much of the lower part of the building, which dictated many of the later moldings, and some of the eastern side chapels. Many contemporary French elements are found in his design: vaults springing without capitals, tightly packed wedge-shaped responds rising from glacis bases, Flamboyant tracery and staggered and syncopated clusters of miniature molded bases. Other aspects are purely English: bold jamb moldings, Perpendicular tracery, and lierne vaults. Reginald is particularly noted for combining classic Perpendicular forms with the new fashion for the 'fantastic.' Reginald may also have been responsible for the designs of the Old Court at King's College and Burwell Church. |
