Huelsenbeck, Richard (German painter, writer, and physician, 1892-1974)

Note: Huelsenbeck met the poet and actor Hugo Ball in 1912. While studying philosophy at the Sorbonne, contributed to Ball and Hans Leybold’s periodical, 'Revolution.' Declared unfit for service in World War I, Huelsenbeck went to Berlin and wrote for 'Die Aktion,' an expressionist periodical. In 1916, he went to Zurich and took part in the Dada activities with Hugo Ball around the Cabaret Voltaire. In January 1917 he helped to found the Berlin Dada group and in 1918 he wrote a Dada manifesto. In 1920, after the First International Dada Fair, he edited the first Dada Almanach.
