Reid family (American architects, active 19th-20th centuries)
|
Note: In 1889 James William Reid joined his brother Merritt in San Francisco where Merritt had already started an architectural practice; they were later joined by a third brother, Watson. The brothers quickly established one of the most important architectural firms in the city. An early important office building in San Francisco was the Call Building (1897), a skyscraper that survived the earthquake and fire of 1906. Other noteworthy buildings included the original Fairmont Hotel, the Fitzhugh Building, the Hale Brothers Department Store, and Cliff House. They also received important commissions for work outside San Francisco, including the Merritt Building in Los Angeles, the Carnegie Library at San Rafael, and the Byron Springs Resort Hotel in Contra Costa County. In Portland, Oregon, they built the Yeon Building (1911) and the Journal Building (1912). Their practice was dissolved in 1932. |
