Note: Brendel, trained as mason, lost his leg in an injury in 1900 and then was committed to a mental hospital in 1906. His first artistic expressions appeared in 1912, when he began to carve figures out of large, heavy blocks of wood. Many of his figures concern the suffering of Christ and are depicted as hermaphrodites.
