Watling, Thomas (Australian painter and draftsman, 1762-before 1814)
|
Note: Born in Scotland, Watling worked as a coach painter in Glasgow in 1788. He was tried as a forger in 1789 and sentenced to 14 years' transportation and deported to Australia, eventually arriving to Port Jackson, New South Wales, 1792. He was under the custody of John White, surgeon general and natural history collector. Watling was assigned to depict the local scenery, inhabitants, plants and animals. He left Australia in 1797, later appearing in Edinburgh, 1806, under further forgery charges, for which he was acquitted. |
