Embriachi, Baldassare (Italian entrepreneur, active ca. 1390-1409)
|
Note: Embriaci was a Florentine of Genoese extraction; he was an entrepreneur and manager of a large workshop of bone carvers but was probably not an active craftsman himself. He is recorded as a jewel dealer trading in Spain, France, and England, and he also acted as the political and banking agent for Giangaleazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan, in Venice. Between 1400 and 1409 the Prior of the Certosa di Pavia made final payments to Baldassare for a large carved bone triptych. Other large triptychs can be attributed to Baldassare's workshop based on stylistic comparison with the Pavia altarpiece. The workshop also produced caskets for bridal gifts and portable house-altars for domestic use. |
