Mansell, Robert (English glassmaker, 1573-1656)
|
Note: Mansell was a glassmaker who built the Broad Street Glasshouse in the City of London (ca. 1617), which was managed by William Robson. By 1618 Mansell was the sole proprietor and in 1623 obtained a patent for various sorts of glassware made in coal furnaces, which he maintained until 1642. His glass production was dominated by flat glass for mirrors, spectacles, and bottles. He mainly employed Italian craftsmen, such as Antonio Miotti, and eventually he owned glasshouses in England, Wales, and Scotland. Mansell was one of the so-called Monopolists, a group that controlled the glass industry through obtaining licences and patents that restricted glass production. |
