Villafranca, Pedro de (Spanish printmaker and painter, ca. 1615-1684)
|
Note: Villafranca was more successful as a printmaker than a painter, and furnished a large number of frontispieces for the works of religious orders. He did more than 150 engravings in the years spanning 1637-1684, using his own compositions as subjects as well as those of his contemporaries, including Velázquez. In 1654 he was named Grabador del Rey by Philip IV, and in 1666 illustrated a book of the king's funeral rites. In later works he adopted the Baroque style. |
