Bauch, Jan (Czech painter, sculptor, and illustrator, 1898-1995)

Note: Important Czech artist who studied in Prague during the early part of the 20th century. He was influenced by the Cubist Georges Braque (1882-1963), and briefly by the Surrealists in the 1930s, later returning to vernacular Baroque traditions and an Expressionist style possibly derived from Georges Rouault (1871-1958). Bauch exhibited a sculpture at the New York World's Fair of 1939: "Invasion of Czechoslovakia" (1939). His expressive style and concerns with his homeland may be summed up in his work "Loreta" (1942), held by the Prague National Gallery.
