Shute, John (English painter, writer, and possibly architect, died 1563)

Note: Shute was the author of the first treatise on architecture in English, "The First and Chief Groundes of Architecture," published in 1563. The treatise has the distinction of containing the first appearance in printed English of the words 'architect' and 'architecture' and of introducing many architectural terms into the English language. The text is largely based on Vitruvius and Sebastiano Serlio and the five full-page engravings in the book may be by Shute himself.
