Oeben, Jean-François (French master ébéniste, 1721-1763, of German birth)

Note: Oeben was born in Germany, the son of a Catholic postmaster; he emigrated to Paris in the 1740s. Despite the disadvantages of foreign birth, he flourished as a royal cabinetmaker in France. He married the sister of another ébéniste. He was given the prestigious title of Cabinetmaker to the King and obtained lodgings and a workshop at the Gobelins Manufactories.
