Darling, Frank (Canadian architect, 1850-1923)
|
Note: Born 17 February 1850; died 19 May 1923. Darling trained in Toronto with Henry Langley and from 1870 to 1873 with George E. Streat and Arthur Blomfield in London. Upon his return to Toronto in 1873, he worked in partnership with Henry Macdougall, S.G. Curry (1880), and John A. Pearson ca. 1892. Darling is most important for his central contribution to the development of the high-quality Canadian bank architecture in a monumental classical style. Admitted to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1886. In 1915, upon the nomination of the Royal Institute of British Architects, he became the first Canadian to win the prestigious gold medal for the promotion of architecture, and the same year he was elected an honory Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
