L'Enfant, Pierre Charles (French architect and city planner, 1754-1825, active in the United States)

Note: Born 2 August 1754; died 4 June 1825 or 14 June 1825. In 1771 Pierre Charles L'Enfant became a student at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris, France, taking courses under his father, the painter Pierre L'Enfant. L'Enfant volunteered to serve in the American army during the War of Independence and sailed for the United States in 1777. He was given the rank of captain in the Corps of Engineer in 1779. After the war, L'Enfant remained in the United States where he continued his professional practice. Among other projects, L'Enfant designed the Old City Hall in New York, the Federal House in Philadelphia, and he surveyed the site and made the plan for the new federal capital in Washington.
