Burton, Decimus (English architect and urban planner, 1800-1881)

Note: Burton was a prolific Greek and Roman revival architect and an expert on the construction of glass and iron conservatories. Notable projects in London include buildings and gardens for the Zoological Society and the Royal Botanical Society in Regent's Park, the Colosseum in Regent's Park, the Ionic screen at Hyde Park Corner, the archway on Constitution Hill, and the Athenaeum Club. Outside of London he is noted for his design of Calverley Estate at Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London between 1817 and 1838. Burton died on 14 December 1881. British architect.
