Record Type: Person
Langenheim, William (American and German photographer, 1807-1874)

Note: Born 23 February 1807; died 4 May 1874. William Langenheim emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1834, and in 1840, the Langenheim brothers, William and Frederick, opened a daguerreotype studio called "W. & F. Langenheim" in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1845, the brothers took the first daguerreotypes of Niagara Falls, New York. In 1849, the Langenheims adopted the negative on glass process invented by Niépce de Saint-Victor. The process, which produced lantern slides, was renamed "hyalotype" by the Langenheims. It was also in this year that the brothers purchased the U.S. patent for the talbotype from William Henry Fox Talbot, though they were unsuccessful in selling the rights to American photographers. In 1850, the Langenheim brothers were among the first photographers to introduce stereoscopy to the United States. They were also the first American producers and retailers of stereocards.
