Austen, Alice (American photographer, 1866-1952)
|
Note: One of the US's earliest and most prolific female photographers. Known to work outside of the studio, Austen often transported up to 50 pounds of photographic equipment on her bicycle. She documented a changing New York City in more than 7000 photographs taken mostly around the turn of the twentieth century. She was in a relationship with her partner of 53 years, Gertrude Tate. The Alice Austen House was officially designated a national site of LGBTQ history by the National Park Service in 2017. |
