Ponting, Herbert (English photographer, photojournalist, and filmmaker, 1870-1935)

Note: Ponting moved to California in the 1890s, and by 1898 he owned a ranch there, and was the manager of a gold mine. By 1900, he had taught himself photography and had been published in several journals in the United States and Europe. In 1901, Ponting was commissioned by the American illustrated newspaper, Leslie's Weekly, to photograph the Far East. His published photos of the Russo-Japanese war, and of the Japanese army on a campaign in Manchuria, brought him subsequent acclaim. In 1909, Ponting was appointed the official photographer of Captain Robert Scott's expedition to the South Pole. From 1910 to 1912, he accompanied Scott on his second expedition to Antarctica at which time he also made films of his journey.
