Record Type: Person
Murnau, F. W. (German filmmaker, 1888-1931)

Note: Renowned German film director whose pioneering methods pushed the artistic boundaries of silent cinema. Influenced by philosophy, art history, and literature, Murnau’s films were Expressionistic or supernatural in nature, with his Der Januskopf (1920; Janus-Faced), a highly praised variation of the Jekyll-and-Hyde, and Nosferatu (1922), one of the first film adaptations of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. After a string of elaborate , entertaining films made in Germany, such as Faust (1926), Murnau was offered a Hollywood contract by Fox Film Corporation and was allowed to use the same staff of technicians and craftsmen he employed with his German films. His first American, Sunrise (1927), is considered one finest silent film ever produced by a Hollywood studio, thought it was a box office failure. Murnau died an untimely death in a car accident in 1931
