Shibusawa, Eiichi (Japanese entrepreneur, industrialist, and philanthropist, 1840-1931)

Note: Eiichi was born in 1840 in what is now Fukaya city, Saitama prefecture, Japan. Growing up he helped with the family businesses in agriculture and commerce, and became a retainer of Hitotsubashi Yoshinobu, who later became shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu. Eiichi travelled to France as a member of shogunal delegation to the 1867 Paris Universal Exposition. He served in the national goverment as chief of the Tax Bureau in the Ministry of Popular Affairs from 1869 to 1873. After leaving the Ministry of Finance, he became the superintendent of the First National Bank, founding some 500 enterprises and economic organizations, and some 600 organizations for social welfare, education, and international exchange. Today, he is widely known as the "father of Japanese capitalism."
