Record Type: Person
Wero (Maori woodcarver, ca. 1810-ca. 1880)

Note: Wero is considered one of the greatest Arawa carvers, even though few biographical facts are known about him. His name was often attributed to artists who worked with him making it difficult to determine which works were actually done by him. His best known works are the Te Rangitakaroro gateway and Te Arawa house. Wero was the first of the great house carvers of the Ngati Tarawhai working entirely with metal tools.
