Record Type: Person
White, John (English watercolorist and draftsman, ca. 1540-ca. 1593-1606, active in America)

Note: John White was the artist of the 1585 expedition sent to Roanoke Island by Sir Walter Raleigh to investigate the possibility of establishing a colony. He completed about 60 watercolors and drawings of the flora, fauna, and the native inhabitants, and made maps of the Virginia coast before he returned to England with Sir Francis Drake in 1586. Sir Walter Raleigh named White governor of the colony and he sailed back to Virginia with his family in 1587. Later that year he returned to England for supplies and was prevented from returning until 1590 because of the Armada and England's war with Spain. When he did return, the settlers and "the lost colony" had disappeared, including his granddaughter, Virginia Dare, the first English child born in America. Twenty-three of White's Virginia watercolors were engraved by Theodore De Bry as illustrations for his 1590 book on the new world. English colonist in Virginia and the Carolinas; painter, cartographer, illustrator, ethnographer. SAF gives the less inclusive dates.
