Rhythm Group (Polish artists' group, active ca. 1922-1932)
|
Note: This Polish artists' group, which flourished between 1922 and 1932, had no clearly defined program except to organize exhibitions of a high standard. Many associated artists represented the Polish Art Deco style and favored classicism, stylized drawing, rhythmic compositions, and decorative effects. The artists achieved their greatest success at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925 and at the "Fine book exhibition" in Paris in 1931. Members also made noteworthy artistic contributions in commercial graphic art and in the decoration of buildings and they received numerous commissions from the state. Although criticized by both avant-garde and conservative artists, the Rhythm group was successful in founding a private school, popularizing art and contributing greatly to the establishment of the Institute of Art Propaganda (Instytut Propagandy Sztuki), the most important exhibiting institution of inter-war Poland. |
