Record Type: Person
Nessos Painter (Attic vase painter, active ca. 620-ca. 600 BCE)

Note: The Nessos Painter painted vases in Athens from about 620 to 600 BCE. He decorated the large vases popular in Athens at this time: amphorae and kraters. He was one of the first Athenian vase painters to adopt the black-figure technique of vase decoration from the city-state of Corinth, where it originated. This new technique and the incorporation of many other popular elements of Corinthian art into his stylistic repertoire meant that the Nessos Painter was the first Athenian vase painter whose work was traded internationally. As with most ancient artists, the true name of the Nessos Painter is unknown; he is identified only by the stylistic traits of his work. Scholars named him after the depiction of Herakles battling the centaur Nessos on an amphora that he painted, now in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
