Suger, Abbot of Saint-Denis (French clergyman, patron, and writer, ca. 1081-1151)
|
Note: Suger came from a peasant family, probably born near St. Denis (now part of Paris); at the age of 10 he was given as an oblate to the Abbey of Saint-Denis. There he formed a lifelong friendship with Prince Louis, who was crowned King Louis VI of France in 1108. A close adviser of the King, he was Regent of France from 1147-1149 while King Louis VII was away on the Second Crusade. Suger was elected Abbot of Saint-Denis in 1122 and in1127 took on the reformation of both the administration and monastic life of the Abbey. He began the rebuilding and refurbishing of the church itself around 1135. His recorded accounts of the construction are of great interest in that Saint-Denis, with its column statues and stained glass windows, was instrumental in the development of the Gothic style of architecture in western Europe. |
