Arfe, Juan de (Spanish goldsmith and silversmith, 1535-1603, of German descent)
|
Note: Juan de Arfe was responsible for the large tabernacles for Avila Cathedral (1564-1571) and Seville Cathedral (1580-1587, although much altered now), as well as the processional cross for Burgos (1592). He touted his severely classicizing style in his own writings, warning his colleagues against using Flemish and French pattern books. His writings include treatises on the art of the goldsmith (1572) and on proportions partly written in verse (1587). Philip III was an important patron. |
