Beneš, Vincenc (Czech painter, writer, and theorist, 1883-1979)
|
Note: Studied at the Prague School of Decorative Art, 1902-1904, then at the Academy of Fine Arts 1904-1907. Joined the Group of Eight after travelling in Dresden, Munich, Berlin, and Paris, and exhibited at the group's second show in 1908. His early work may have been influenced by Bohumil Kubišta, with whom he shared a studio. In 1909 he joined the Mánes Association of Plastic Artists, resigning in 1911 to found the Group of Plastic Artists. He began painting in a cubist manner after 1910, displaying a devotion to the work of Braque and Picasso. Most of his cubist works are no longer extant. In the 1920s he began to discard the influence of cubism, and focussed on landscapes and still-lifes. After WWII his work shows the influence of neo-impressionism. |
